Defective Car Provided and Refund amount deducted without informing

I rented a car for 31st dec 2022 and 1st of Jan 2023. I test drove the vehicle while accepting it and paid rs.8000 (500 of which were paid in advance on 28th of dec, 3000 as renting charges and 5000 security deposit). It was looking fine except for the gear knob. I had to engage it twice (it was no smooth as it usually is), still however, considering it as normal, i said OK to the vehicle.
Later after half an hour i had canceled the plan for which i had rented the car. I called the owner of the car from whom I rented it, and asked him that since our plan was cancelled, the vehicle is no more needed. So he said its okay, bring the vehicle and take back the payment. I even asked him if there shall be any cancellation charges (kahi cut hotil ka?). He said bring the vehicle and take the money back. (note: he didn't specifically mentioned any cancellation charges that shall be deducted).
So we took the vehicle to submit it and on the way only the gear knob stopped working, it seemed to be broken. So we called him to inform about the same, he came, inspected and held us responsible for the incident claiming we don't know how to drive.
Also, he told us that the payment shall be done by the day's evening.
He paid Rs. 5000/- on that day having said that balance (i.e 3000) shall be done by Monday. Today being Tuesday i gave him a reminder. He called me up and told me that from rs 3000, only 1500 shall be refundable. Thus, our complaint is if any charges had to be cut, why weren't we told specifically about the amount? Why even after me specifically asking him about the cancellation charges(as mentioned earlier) didn't said anything about the same?
Thus, i want a solution in the case,
